Proto-metal (1968 – 1979)

Opphavet til betegnelsen ‘heavy metal’ i forbindelse med musikk er usikker. I novellen ‘The Soft Machine’ fra 1962, brukte forfatteren William Burroughs navnet ‘Urianian Willy, the heavy metal kid’ om en av karakterene. I hans neste novelle bruker han betegnelsen som en metafor for narkotika. Burroughs hadde nok ingen planer om å overføre frasen sin til musikken, men spilte nok likevel en rolle. Det spekuleres også i om uttrykket stammer fra hippiene, som forbandt det med en laber sinnsstemning. I 1968 brukte Steppenwolf uttrykket i ‘Born To Be Wild’, nærmere bestemt i ordspillet ‘heavy metal thunder’.

Amerikansk blues sto på sekstitallet sterkt på de britiske øyer, hvor Rolling Stones og The Yardbirds hadde covret sin andel klassiske blueslåter. De gikk ikke av banen for å sette opp tempoet og benytte seg av elektriske gitarer. Også andre artister som MC5, Jeff Beck, Cream og Blue Cheer hadde leflet med en mer aggressiv blues. Rythm and Blues hadde også vært viktig i utformingen av den tidligste rock n roll’en, hvor Elvis Presley spilte en nøkkelrolle. Den elektriske gitaren hadde gitt muligheter for en høyere og mer dissonant lyd, mens bluesens shuffle-trommer hadde måttet vike for en mer aggressiv, høylytt og kompleks tilnærming. Kvantesprang i studioteknologi ga også bedre muligheter for å fange kraften i innspillingene.

Den tidligste versjonen av metal sprang ut av Birmingham da Led Zeppelin og Black Sabbath skapte en ny musikkform gjennom å eksperimentere med blues-skalaene. Bandene var også svært inspirert av amerikansk psykedelisk rock, kanskje best identifisert ved Jimi Hendrix og The Doors. Powergrepet hadde allerede blitt innført av britiske band som The Who og The Kinks. Den første virkelige metallåten var det tidligere nevnte Blue Cheer som stod bak gjennom sin cover av Eddie Cochrans ‘Summertime Blues’ i 1968.

Omtrent samtidig som Led Zeppelin debuterte, slapp King Crimson ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’, hvor låten ’21st Century Schizoid Man’ som benyttet seg av en kraftig fuzz, distorted vokal og en dissonant solo. Likevel var det Led Zeppelin som fikk æren for en ny sound og sjanger, og fikk sine medløpere i Deep Purple, Uriah Heep og UFO. Flere band tok også i bruk en hardere lyd, men befant seg nærmere rocken – og betegnelsen hardrock ble lansert. Blant disse var Jethro Tull, Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Kiss, Queen, Aerosmith og Ted Nugent.

Det første virkelige metalbandet, som i sin tur skulle bidra til nær sagt alle undersjangre var Black Sabbath. Tommy Iommi tok utgangspunkt i horrorfilmer når han skrudde sammen den dype fuzzen som skulle bli bandets varemerke. Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler og Bill Ward kompletterte lineup’en på deres selvtitulerte debutplate, som ble innledet av den illevarslende ‘Black Sabbath’. Resten er en pågående historie.

The origin of the term ‘heavy metal’ in connection with music is uncertain. In the short story ‘The Soft Machine’ from 1962, the author William Burroughs’ coined the expression ‘Urianian Willy, the heavy metal kid’ about one of the characters. However, in his next novel he used the term as a metaphor for drugs. Burroughs probably didn’t have any plans of transferring the phrase to music, but it might’ve played a role. There’s also speculation whether the expression derived from the hippie culture, which associated it with low moods. In 1968, Steppenwolf used the phrase in ‘Born To Be Wild’, specifically in the wordplay ‘heavy metal thunder’.
In the sixties, American blues had strong influence on the British Isles, where the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds had covered their share of classic blues songs. They sped up the tempo and took advantage of electric guitars. Other artists, such as MC5, Jeff Beck, Cream and Blue Cheer had experimented with a more aggressive blues. Rhythm and Blues had also been important in the design of the earliest rock n roll, where Elvis Presley played a key role. The electric guitar had enabled the opportunity for a more massive and dissonant sound, while blues shuffle drums had to give way to a more aggressive, loud and complex approach. Quantum leaps in studio technology gave better possibilities for capturing the power of the recordings.

The earliest version of metal ran out of Birmingham, when Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath created a new musical form through experimenting with the blues scales. The bands were also influenced by American psychedelic rock, perhaps best identified through Jimi Hendrix and The Doors. The power grip had already been introduced by British bands like The Who and The Kinks. The first real metal song was the creation of aforementioned Blue Cheer through their cover of Eddie Cochran’s ‘Summertime Blues’ in 1968.

About the same time Led Zeppelin released their debut, King Crimson released ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’, where the song ’21st Century Schizoid Man’ introduced heavy fuzz, distorted vocals and a dissonant solo. Yet it was Led Zeppelin who took credit for a new sound and genre, and not before long their endured the competition of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and UFO. Several bands took advantage of a harder sound as well, but found themselves closer to rock – and the term ‘hard rock’ was introduced. Among these were Jethro Tull, Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper, AC / DC, Kiss, Queen, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent.

The first real metal band, which in turn would contribute to virtually all forthcoming sub-genres was Black Sabbath. Tommy Iommi based his deep fuzz, which became the band’s trademark sound, on horror movies. Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward completed the line-up on their self-titled debut album, which was heralded by the ominous ‘Black Sabbath’. The rest is ongoing history.
